Sometime in late 1977 early 1978 I had left my first job and wasn’t working so we moved out of the flat above the pie shop and moved back home to our roots, but having nowhere to live we moved in to my grandparents house, I didn’t own much tech only my 12″ b/w portable TV and a cassette recorder, I’m not sure if the cassette recorder was mine or my brothers.
My grandparents didn’t watch much TV and I had no say or control of what to watch and the TV they did watch was mostly in the evening and was the popular entertainment shows at the time and all in black and white, If I wanted to watch anything myself I had my own TV, and the only thing I can remember watching on my little TV was F1 motorsport.
When I was younger we would often come to stay at my grandparents for holidays and I would often bring the this little 12″ TV with me, I don’t know why as I would often never use it.
I the front room of my grandparents house there was a very large radiogram in the corner, which thinking about it now as very odd as the left speaker pointed to the middle of the room and the right speaker pointed down the back of the sofa, I don’t know how old it was or the make but I was aloud to listen to the radio or their records as long as it was quiet, sadly for me their record collection mainly consisted of “Max Bygraves Sing-a-longs” and the “King Singers” I would often spend time retuning the radio and listening obscure radio stations on long wave.
In the living / dining room there was a portable radio that was turned on mostly in the mornings to BBC Radio 2 or Radio 4 I think and I loved sitting there eating breakfast listening to radio 2, and often when I could I would retune the radio and listening obscure radio stations, by the time we moved out I quite liked listening to Max Bygraves and the King Singers
Many years later when my grandparents moved to a smaller house I was given the portable radio which I still have and it still works, I also wanted the radiogram but that given or sold before they knew I wanted it.
